Pick your first AI job

What decision this helps you make. Which AI job to start first. What you walk away with. Your jobs on a value and effort chart, the one we'd start with and why, ready to print or save as a PDF. Run it again every 90 days.

List 3 to 10 jobs where work gets dropped, redone or delayed. For each one, add the hours it costs and how hard it would be to start. You'll see your jobs on a 2x2 chart, the one we'd start with, and why.

1. How many people work at your company?

We use this to put a dollar figure on the time each job costs. It changes the dollars, not the order of your jobs.

1. How many people work at your company?
Where these numbers come from

Each figure is what one hour a week of one person's time costs a company in a year, pay plus benefits. It's the cost of one hour of work × 48 working weeks.

1 to 49 workers: $37.64 × 48 = $1,806.72, about $1,807. 50 to 99: $41.03 × 48 = $1,969.44, about $1,969. 100 to 499 workers: $47.96 × 48 = $2,302.08, about $2,302. 500 or more: $67.68 × 48 = $3,248.64, about $3,249.

Source: U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Employer Costs for Employee Compensation, Table 6, June 2026, released Sep 9, 2026. (https://www.bls.gov/news.release/ecec.t06.htm). BLS counts workers per worksite. 48 working weeks is our estimate: 52 weeks minus about 4 for holidays and time off.

2. List the jobs

Think of one team and one normal week. Where did work get dropped, redone or delayed? Each of those is a possible AI job. Add at least 3 and up to 10.

  • Dropped means work fell through the cracks, like a follow-up nobody sent.
  • Redone means work got done twice, like typing the same numbers into two systems.
  • Delayed means work had to wait, like a customer waiting for an answer because the one person who knows is busy.
